Twelve Tips to Hire a Contractor in Monterey to Remodel Your Home

  1. Obtain three or more estimates in writing.
  2. Verify references and call to check on the work. If possible, go by and visit earlier jobs
  3. .Call Your Better Business Bureau or Your Chamber of Commerce to see if there are complaints.
  4. The contract should state precisely what work is to be done and how and how any changes to the contract will be handled.
  5. Make the minimum down payment. That way you will not lose as much money if your contractor does not finish the job.
  6. Make sure that the contractor obtains all needed , licenses, an make sure he/she has insurance. The contract should state when the work will be finished and what recourse you have if it is not finished.
  7. There may be a 3 day recission period where you can cancel the contract after signing.
  8. Will there be subcontractors involved for part of the work? Or will the contractor’s workers will do the complete job? Will the contractor or an experienced foreman be on site to supervise?
  9. The contractor should indemnify you if work does not meet local building codes or regulations.
  10. The contract should specify that the contractor will clean up when finished and be responsible if any damage is done.
  11. Guarantee that materials are satisfactory.
  12. Hold final payment until you are satisfied with the job.
