Moving – Monterey County
Tips for Moving
Notify the post office, usually 2 to 4 weeks in advance of your move.
Notify banks, credit card companies, and magazine subscriptions, of your address change.
Make a list of friends, relatives, and business associates who you should notify of your move.
Plan to have utilities disconnected at your former house and re-connected at your new home.
Cancel your newspaper subscription.
Check insurance policy for items you are moving. You pay extra to have the moving company cover your possessions.
If you are moving your appliances then clean them out in advance.
Long distance moves are often charged according to weight. Watch for movers that use excess padding to increase the weight.
Does your condominium or co-op have restrictions on using the elevator, height problems with larger trucks or using certain exits?
Keep a box with the things you will want the most such as toilet paper, toothpaste, hand soap, bags for trash, scissors, hammer, screwdriver, paper, pencils, cups and plates, water, snacks.
If you are not able to move into your next residence immediately, then consider having the moving company put your possessions in “crates”. The crates are then removed from the truck and stored until you are ready. This is cheaper as they do not have to load the possessions multiple times.
Also if you’re moving out of the area:
Obtain copies of dental records, prescriptions for both family and your pets as well as medical records for everyone.
Obtain copies of your kids school records for the new schools.
Ask for introductions from friends to people they know in your new home area.
Do you need a crate or other items for pets traveling by car?
Tell a friend or relative what route you are taking.
Open a bank account in advance in your new area, plus take traveler’s checks and have your ATM card handy.
Don’t forget the contents in any safe deposit box you may have.
Get boxes for your plants and make sure they have air circulating (punch holes in the boxes if needed).
